The Perceptual Alchemist was born from my determination to move out of survival mode following the successful ablation of a heart defect called the Wolf-Parkinson-White syndrome, which is a condition where the presence of a small piece of flesh between the upper and lower chamber of the heart generates irregular heart beats. Even if this condition doesn’t represent any serious danger, it can, during any intense physical activity, lead to a fatal heart attack. Exercising has always been sacred to me. Running, swimming and playing actively with the kids were part of my daily routine. But when the time came to resume the lifestyle I enjoyed so much prior to my diagnosis, I plunged into darkness with the apprehension that if I became physically active again, I could face a heart issue.

My training as a mechanical engineer with 10 years of experience as a project manager in a manufacturing environment, combined with my ongoing reading of self-help books and participation in self-development courses, have always provided me the tools to successfully overcome the challenging situations of life. To move out of survival mode, I will take the role of a Warrior by raising my sword and going into conflict with whatever will stand in my way. I experienced a lot of success with this approach thinking that I had finally found the perfect formula to conquer anything that life could throw at me.

But how could I possibly raise the sword against my heart and pierce it as if it was a rival? Obviously, the warrior approach didn’t work anymore for me. Then one day, I took whatever courage was left and went for a run. That epiphanic event made me realize that I had moved out of survival mode to thrive, but to thrive in a different way; not against adversity like a Warrior but rather with adversity where the term Perceptual Alchemist was derived.

This clear distinction between against or with has helped me gain a deeper understanding of what adversity is all about and the choices we have when a hardship strikes our life.
